The core lessons every guitarist needs, in one path
These 16 courses are the foundation of how Steve teaches guitar: chords and rhythm, the fretboard and theory, your ear, the blues, and soloing. Each one builds on the last, so you're never guessing what to learn next.
Foundations
Learn to hold the guitar, change chords, strum in time and play barre chords. Finish by setting up a practice routine you can use for the rest of the path.
Play Guitar in 8 Weeks
An eight-week start for new players, from holding the guitar and the pick to your first chords and strumming patterns. Lessons include songs like Horse With No Name, Free Fallin' and Knocking on Heaven's Door, and you get a first look at barre chords and power chords.
Why it's in the path: This is the starting point for the whole path, since every later course assumes you can hold the guitar, change chords and keep time.
Strumming Made Easy
A short, focused course on the strumming hand, starting from scratching and simple up strums. By the end you can use strumming patterns with chords, deaden strings and find your place in a song.
Why it's in the path: Steady strumming is what makes chords sound like songs, and it sets up the rhythm work in every later course.
Barre Chords Made Easy
This course shows how barre chords grow out of the open chords you already know. By the end you can play major, minor, dominant 7 and minor 7 barre chords from the 6th, 5th and 4th strings and use them in common chord progressions.
Why it's in the path: Barre chords let you play any chord anywhere on the neck, and learning the notes here prepares you for scales and the fretboard work ahead.
Create a Practice Routine
This course shows you how to split practice into four 'buckets' (core, theory and fretboard, song study, and creativity) and build a daily and weekly routine. It also gives practice paths for each level and a set of core exercises for picking, legato, scales and pentatonic licks.
Why it's in the path: Taking this at the end of Stage 1 gives you a routine to carry through the rest of the path, and its paths point to the courses that come next.
First Steps in Lead Guitar
Start playing lead with simple phrases, the five pentatonic positions and a set of licks. Build your technique and practice over jam tracks.
Learn How To Solo
A first course in lead guitar that covers building a scale, finding root notes and shaping short phrases. By the end you can meander over a song, repeat and vary ideas, and add bends, hammer-ons, pull-offs and simple licks.
Why it's in the path: It turns scale shapes into music early, so the fretboard and technique courses that follow have a purpose.
Unlocking The Fretboard Connection
This course walks through all five minor pentatonic positions and shows how to connect them across the neck. It then adds the major pentatonic, relative major and minor, and turns the pentatonic into the full diatonic scale in five positions.
Why it's in the path: Once you can move freely across the neck, licks, blues and improvising all get easier.
Simple Guitar Licks
A set of 27 short licks, each taught in its own lesson. By the end you have a set of ready-made phrases to drop into your solos.
Why it's in the path: Licks give you vocabulary, so the phrasing ideas from Learn How To Solo have something to work with.
Essential Guitar Techniques
A large technique library in 10 modules covering chords, strumming, picking-hand and fretting-hand skills, slides, vibrato, bends, arpeggios, harmonics and acoustic techniques. Lessons run from palm muting and hammer-ons to tapping and sweeping.
Why it's in the path: Use it as a technique reference while you learn to solo. Start with the basic modules now and come back to the arpeggio and harmonic lessons in later stages.
Jam Tracks library
A library of backing tracks, sorted by style, for practicing solos and improvising. It has no lessons. You play along with it while you work through the other courses.
Starting in Stage 2, the tracks give you a band to play over, so every scale and lick gets used in real time.
Know the Fretboard and the Music
Learn why the shapes work, connect scales and chords across the neck, and train your ear. Then put it all together in the blues.
Music Theory Made Easy
Guitar-focused theory, from the chromatic scale and intervals to major and minor scales, key signatures and chords built on the major scale. By the end you understand relative keys, the circle of 5ths, extended chords up to the 13th and the basics of modes.
Why it's in the path: Theory explains why the shapes you've learned work, which makes the scales, CAGED, ear training and modes courses much easier.
Essential Guitar Scales
This course connects the major (diatonic) scale in seven positions and the minor pentatonic in five positions, then covers memorizing the notes and moving out of box positions. Later modules add the major pentatonic, the blues scale, harmonic minor and a first look at modes, including Aeolian and Dorian.
Why it's in the path: It widens the scale vocabulary from Stage 2 and leads straight into modes and melodic soloing.
CAGED Made Simple 2.0
An introduction to the CAGED system, starting with the C chord and moving on to connecting shapes and chord fragments. By the end you can use CAGED shapes for soloing, with other chords, with minor chords and to combine rhythm comping with lead lines.
Why it's in the path: CAGED links chords and scales across the neck, and How To Play Melodic Solos builds on it directly in 'CAGED Chord Soloing'.
Learn Songs By Ear
An ear training course that starts with pitch matching, rhythm and intervals, then moves to hearing chords, chord progressions and song structures. By the end you can pick out intervals and chords, hear the sound of each mode, and recognize simple melodies such as Happy Birthday and Amazing Grace.
Why it's in the path: Training your ear links theory to sound, so you can learn songs yourself and choose notes by ear when you improvise.
Learn To Play Blues
A complete blues course that covers groove, the 12-bar form, dominant 7th and 9th chords and chord fragments, then moves to lead technique and blues scales. By the end you can play 12-bar rhythm parts, solo with minor and major pentatonic and blues scales, and play turnarounds and jams in E, G and A.
Why it's in the path: Blues puts rhythm, pentatonic scales and phrasing into one style, and many improvising ideas in Stage 4 build on it.
Advanced Soloing and Improvising
Use modes and chord tones to build solos that follow the music. Then improvise in real time in major, minor, blues and metal settings.
Modes Made Easy
A six-week course that reviews scale and chord theory, then teaches all seven modes and how to use parallel modes. The final week applies each mode to well-known songs, such as Evil Ways and Oye Como Va for Dorian and White Rabbit for Phrygian.
Why it's in the path: Modes give you specific sounds to choose on purpose, and melodic soloing and improvising build on that choice.
How To Play Melodic Solos
You build complete solos over three progressions in C, E and B major, moving step by step from simple arpeggios and chord-chasing arpeggios to pentatonic and full diatonic solos. Later lessons add chromatic runs, color notes and CAGED chord soloing, so your lines follow the melody and the chords.
Why it's in the path: It brings together scales, CAGED and modes into solos that follow the chords. That is the skill you'll use when you improvise freely.
Learn To Improvise Your Solos
This course covers improvising from the ground up, starting with setup, tone and timing, then phrasing tools like bends, vibrato and slides, and soloing tactics such as minimal notes, intervallic playing and double stops. It ends with real-world jams in major, minor, blues, metal and punk settings.
Why it's in the path: This is the last step in the path. It puts everything you've learned to use in real time over a band.
